How Does Duct Air Conditioning Work

Ducted aircon systems are widely used in the home, office,e and commercial spaces. They have advantages over the split system as they can cover a huge area ensuring the expected temperature level for each zone. But how exactly do duct aircon systems work? Let’s learn about the key components of a ducted aircon system and its working process.

Key Components of a Ducted Aircon System

Before we know about the working process, let us know about the essential components of a ducted system.

Outdoor unit ( compressor and condenser)

Like the split system, ducted aircon system as an outdoor unit consisting of compressor and condenser units. These components are responsible for removing heat from the indoor area. The working process of compressor unit is simple. It circulates refrigerant gas around the system. The condenser coil will release the heat to the environment. The outdoor unit is usually situated on the rooftop of the building.

Evaporator coil

The function of the evaporator coil is to absorb heat from the inside through the refrigerant gas and circulate the gas to the condenser unit. The evaporator coils are found in the duct system. Like the split system, it is not situated inside the room.

Air handler

This is the component that is found near the indoor unit. It is responsible for circulating hot or cool air to indoors. It contains a fan blower that pushes the air inside the space.

Duckt network

This is a network of pipes that will carry the cooled or hot air from the aircon unit to the rooms of the house. Return ducks will bring the air of the room back to the aircon system.

Thermostat

This is the temperature control system that will detect the room temperature. When the temperature of the room changes from the set value, it will give a signal to the aircon system to act accordingly to maintain the desired temperature.

Heating coil (optional)

It is an optional component of a ducted aircon system. If heating is required for the system, then a heating coil unit is installed inside the air handler. After the heat is generated by this unit, the blower fan circulates the heat inside the ductwork.

Blower fan

The blower fan is located inside the air handler. Once the air is cooled by the evaporator coil or heated by the heating coil, the blower fan blows the air inside the duct network.

Damper

The damper is a device that is located inside the duct network. This device works as a valve or air flow regulator. It is a vital component in zoned air conditioning systems where the temperature of each room can be controlled. The damper can regulate the amount of cool or hot air. It flows the right amount of air to maintain the desired temperature of a certain indoor area.

Air filter

Air filters are used in multiple stages of the air conditioning system. These devices are used to filter contaminants such as dust, allergens and small particles like bacteria. Cool or hot air pass through an air filter before they are distributed to the duct network.

Ducted Aircon Working Process – Step by Step

Step 1 – Temperature detection

The process begins with temperature monitoring and controlling the system. A thermostat is used to sense the room temperature. When the temperature changes, it will communicate with the aircon system to start the cooling process.

Step 2: Air intake from the room

After the system activation, hot air from the room is sucked by the return fan or pump. It will take the air to the air handler unit where this air will be cooled.

Step 3: Refrigerant compression and condensation

The refrigerant present in the coil of the heat handler system will absorb heat. It will flow this heat to the outdoor unit. The gas will travel through the compressor to the condenser coil where the heat will be released to the air.

Step 4: Cooled air distribution

Once the air is cooled by the evaporator coil present in the air handler, it will then move to the ductwork system by the blower. Cool air will travel throughout the building.

Step 5: Air recirculation

The process will run until the space reaches its desired temperature. This is called air recirculation. This recirculation process keeps the room cool and ensures a constant room temperature.

ducted aircon system working processFAQ

What is the role of the heating coil in a duct air conditioning system?

If the ducted system has the heating option, the heating coil will generate heat that will pass through the duct network to raise the room temperature.

What’s the role of a blower fan in an air conditioning system?

The blower fan will blow air inside the duct network.

Why are dampers important in a duct air conditioning system?

Dampers work as an air-controlling system. Without them, zoning or local temperature control is not possible in a ducted system.

How often should I change the air filter in my duct air conditioning system?

The air filter should typically be changed every 1 to 3 months, depending on the type of filter and the air quality in your area.

Can I manually adjust the dampers in my duct system?

Yes, in many duct systems, dampers can be manually adjusted to regulate airflow.
