VRF vs. VRV Aircon: What’s the Difference?

There is no difference between VRF  and VRV aircon systems if we consider their functionality. So why are these two aircon systems named differently? We’ll discover this in a while.

When you are looking for ‘high-end’ air conditioning units for large homes or commercial facilities, you might come across the terms ‘VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow)’ and ‘VRV (Volume of Refrigerant Variable)’. What Are VRF And VRV Systems?

Essentially, VRV and VRF system units are interchangeable. Their trademark “VRV” was first used by Daikin when they developed the technology. After the invention of the technology, other manufacturers started using the term VRF. From this, we can conclude that the two terms serve the same purpose although the brand names for the systems might be different. This is the sole marketing difference in branding, not functionality. For the average consumer, referring to the technology as VRF or VRV wouldn’t change anything.

How Do VRF / VRV Systems Work?  

Both VRF and VRV systems utilize the same fundamental principle of increasing and decreasing refrigerant flow to different evaporators served by a single condenser. This allows them to provide temperature control in different zones of a building. Instead of shutting off the condenser unit completely after reaching a set temperature, these systems use the modulating type of control that keeps the whole system running continuously.  

Another important characteristic of VRF/VRV systems is that they can offer cooling and heating at the same time, depending on the specific configuration. This makes them suitable for most types of buildings where different areas may require different temperatures.  

 

Types of VRF / VRV Systems  

There are two main types of VRF / VRV systems:  

Heat Pump System: This type allows either heating or cooling in all zones at one time. It’s ideal for open spaces where a uniform temperature is required.  

Heat Recovery System: This version allows one zone to be heated while another is cooled at the same time. Works best for multi-zoned buildings with diverse requirements such as hotels or office buildings where some rooms may need cooling and others will require heating.

Although the technology used is the same, below are the key differences between these two systems:

Branding: 

In the previous discussion we mentioned that VRF was introduced as a generic technology that was used by most manufacturers. VRV is the term introduced by Daikin. You will use VRV technology if you pick a Daikin system, while other brands like Mitsubishi or LG use the term VRF for their systems. 

Compatibility and Options: 

Different manufacturers tend to have different features in their VRF systems. Daikin’s VRV systems for example, may have some integration options that are not available in competitor’s VRF systems. When choosing brands, look for other options like system capabilities, compatibility with building management systems, and installation simplicity. 

Cost and Availability: 

In some areas or with some suppliers, VRV systems cost more, or are more available than VRF systems. The competing brands’ VRF systems do offer similar features but at much lower prices.

Innovation and Advancements: 

Because Daikin owns the technology VRV, they make innovation and updates on these systems first. Some customers might prefer Daikin’s offers because they can trust them believing that Daikin’s technology is more advanced.

  • Building Size and Layout: Both systems work exceptionally well for large multi-zone buildings such as offices, hotels, or apartment complexes.   
  • Energy Efficiency: VRF/VRV systems have a reputation for being energy efficient due to their ability to control the flow of refrigerant. If saving energy is your primary focus, then any of the two systems would work perfectly. 
  • Budget: VRV might be a little more expensive compared to VRF systems. Do not forget to get quotation from different dealers before finalizing your decision.
  • Brand Preference: If you prefer Daikin as a brand, go for VRV. If you are flexible and willing to consider other brands like Mitsubishi or LG, then VRF will work best.

They serve the same purpose, with the only difference being the manufacturer or the model-specific features and innovations provided by each brand.
